Will There Be Another Super-group to sing for Africa? Canadian Government to Match Donations.

1 John 3:17. But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?
I remember 25 years ago and the drought-ridden images that flooded my TV as a young child.  It was 1985 and the Ethiopian Drought inspired large groups of musical artists to record two special songs in aid of the plight.  "Do they know it's Christmas?" was recorded by American and UK artists, while Canadian Musicians recorded "Tears are not enough."  The money from sales of these songs as well as the LIVE AID concerts to follow went towards humanitarian relief efforts. FYI: Phil Collins was the only musician to perform on two continents on the same day for LIVE AID.  He performed at Wembley Stadium in London, UK, then took the Concorde and a helicopter to JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, USA.

Flash forward to present day, the images on TV are similar, and I am 25 years older.  Life has made me hard in many ways. I started out with high hopes and wild dreams of helping to save the world as a missionary.  Life did not take that path and dreams have faded to distant memory.  My beautiful daughter has softened my heart a great deal. I cannot turn the channel when the Appeals for Africa run in their 15-30 second allotments in between TV shows.  And I know I could not look into the eyes of a child in need and turn away.  This African Drought has created a mass NEED, and I can only imagine what it must be like for a parent to look at their child wasting away and have no way to help. The word Heartbreaking doesn't even cover it.

The Canadian Government is matching donations until September 16.  I can't pack my bags and go to Africa today, but I can text GIVE to 45678 and donate $5.  What are you able to give to help 11 million people?

What UNICEF is saying:

A deadly combination of drought, on-going conflict and escalating food prices has placed over 11 million people in need of life-saving aid across Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia – an area known as the Horn of Africa. Over 2.5 million children under five are acutely malnourished and wasting away.
This is the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world today. It is more than a food crisis – it is a crisis for child survival.  The UN has declared a famine in several regions in Southern Somalia, officially indicating that malnutrition and child mortality rates are at emergency levels. In these famine zones, almost 10% of children under age five die every three months. Thousands of families are crossing the border from Somalia to Kenya, the site of the largest refugee camp in the world, but many children are not surviving the two-to-three week journey.
Donate now to help UNICEF provide life-saving supplies.
Two emergencies are developing: one in overcrowded camps and another in drought-affected villages. Urgent action is needed to save and protect lives. In addition to a lack of food and water, malnourished children are extremely susceptible to killer diseases, (including measles, malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia), and a host of child protection issues.  Help us in providing life-saving aid to children caught in this emergency.
Donate online, call 1 800 567-4483 or text GIVE to 45678 ($5). Individual donations will be matched by the Government of Canada until September 16.

What the Bible says about Giving to the Poor:
Deuteronomy 15:7. If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.
Proverbs 19:17. He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, and He will repay him for his good deed.
Isaiah 58:10. And if you give yourself to the hungry, and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness, and your gloom will become like midday. And the LORD will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.

Bible verses quoted from the New International Version c1995.
